Wesley Martin Berg employs figurative imagery culled from folklore, popular culture, and historical artwork in paintings and sculptures that are noteworthy for their Neo-Expressionist technique and the monochromatic black color palette he typically uses. Many of his works represent a singular, ambivalent character, who masks his thoughts and identity behind a hat and overcoat. “The imagery represents the recurrent death of civilization, morality, rebirth, corruption, piety, sex and God,” Berg says. “The decadence my characters are engaged in is the sort that questions and is reactionary to contemporary American ideologies.”
